MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A late night fire at an apartment complex displaced four families who were living in the Greenbriar Apartments on Madewell Street.

Joyce Hill's daughter lived in the apartment complex. She says the fire appears to have started in her daughter's unit.

"She was cooking some fries and she went to check on her four or 5-month-old baby, I can' t think right now. And when she got back in there, her 5-year-old told her, 'Mama, mama, the stove on fire,'" explained Hill.

Firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the two-story wood-framed building. They were able to put the fire out less than 20 minutes later.

But the smoke, fire, and water caused so much damage to four of the units that they were deemed unlivable, leaving 17 people homeless.

"The whole apartment's gone, so she has nothing," Hill said about her daughter. "But all the children are out and doing okay. Everybody got out of the surrounding apartments."

The Red Cross is helping the four families who were forced from their homes.

Nobody was injured.
