Parents claim sons were paddled by football coaching staff

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Two parents begged the Shelby County School Board Tuesday night to get involved in an investigation into claims that their boys were abused at school.

Each school board meeting includes a time for public comments.

Eric Berry used the opportunity to publicly claim that his son was mistreated by his high school football coaching staff.

"I'm sick and tired of waiting," said Berry. "These kids are being abused. They're being talked to bad. And what happened to my son was outrageous."

Berry's son played football at Southwind High School with Donna Jackson's son. She, too, lodged a public allegation that her son took a paddling and she did not approve.

"It still hurt me now to find out that he was paddled with a board," she said to the school board. "I have a good child. My child is not a bad kid. And they say it was because of his grades."

Jackson says school administrators gave her the run-around and that nobody in the superintendent's office returned any of her calls.

Berry says he was told an investigation is underway but he has not noticed.

"Nothing has been done. My son has not been interviewed. My wife has not been interviewed. I have not been interviewed. If you're gonna do an investigation, do it right," said Berry.

The Shelby County School System says it is still digging for details and answers to these particular claims.
