Parents have chance to weigh in on superintendent search

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – The auditorium at East High School seats hundreds. But a public meeting Wednesday night to get community input on the superintendent search may as well have been held in a classroom.

Parent Genessia Boyd was among just four or five parents not employed by the either city or county schools to show up.

"And coming from trying to fight for different things for our children," said Boyd.  "It kind of is a letdown."

The Illinois-based firm conducting the superintendent search is holding several meetings to gauge public opinion.  This was the first meeting open to all.

"To make sure we attract the right person for this new and exciting opportunity," said one of the presenters.

Search officials saw opportunity in the less than perfect attendance.

"Which is going to give us a chance to have some real interchange here," said one search firm employee.

Those who came clearly care about the direction of Memphis and Shelby County schools and the person eventually selected to lead the consolidated district.

"I expect him to actually come in and help our educational system, make it better, and actually make everything run smoothly like when I went to school," said Boyd.

She said many parents may not have a way to get to meetings while others just don't care.

Another meeting is scheduled for Thursday night at Houston High School.  It begins at 7:00pm.
