AUBURN HILLS, MI -

(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Tigers beat the St. Mary's Gaels 54-52 Thursday afternoon to advance to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Tigers will play the Michigan State Spartans out of the Big Ten conference on Saturday with the winner moving on to the Sweet 16.

Memphis carried a 10 point lead into halftime, holding the Gaels to just 22 points in the first 20 minutes.

Joe Jackson led the way for Memphis, scoring 14 points while adding six rebounds and seven assists. Meanwhile, the Tigers held St. Mary's biggest threat, Matthew Dellavedova, to just 3-13 shooting, and only 10 points.

While the Tigers maintained a comfortable lead throughout the game, the final minute saw a fierce Gaels comeback, allowing St. Mary's to take the potential game winning shot as time expired.

The Tigers held a six point lead with 19 seconds left in the game when the Gaels' Brad Waldrow made a tip shot to cut the lead to four.

After a D.J. Stephens free throw, the Gaels hit a 3-pointer and the ensuing inbounds play went awry for the Tigers, as they lost the ball out of bounds. Down 54-52 with just under two seconds remaining, the Gaels turned to their all time leading scorer, Dellavedova for a potential game winning three that sailed just over the basket.

D.J. Stephens was the hero on defense for Memphis, as the senior registered 8 blocks, while the Gaels had zero total blocks the entire game.

With the win, the Tigers record improves to 32-4.
