School merger supporters hold demonstration

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - About a dozen people showed up outside the administrative offices of Shelby County Schools Thursday morning, not to protest, but to show their support for unified schools.

Braving the cold and media microphones, a dozen or so members of various non-profit groups shared their hopes and support for a Unified Shelby County School district.

"I think what's really neat is when you bring the voices of these organizations together to talk about this work as a whole," said Lisa Watts of Teach Plus. "How it affects teachers, how it affects students. And at the end of the day, how it affects the community at-large, because our teachers and our students are the greatest aspect of what we do in our community."

Watts believes the more involved the community is in the merger process the better it is for the children whose education depends on a successful merger.

"A great message today going forward is: Insure that your voice is heard. As a community member, whether you have children in the district or not, insure that your voice is heard about what's taking place around effective teaching and absolutely about what's taking place as it regards our superintendent search," said Watts.
