Mobile clinic helps thousands of homeless families

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WM-TV) - A mobile clinic is the answer to thousands of prayers from homeless families in Memphis.

The work done inside has led to Baptist Memorial Health Care being named a top community outreach health care organization in the 2013 Hospital Charitable Services Awards. It is one of 10 in the entire country.

Now, a new partnership and expanded services are also now in order.

Volore Granger, a recovering addict, lives with her 6-year-old daughter and 109 other homeless families in the Salvation Army's Jackson Avenue facility.

"Mahogany was exposed to drugs while I was with her [pregnant], so she suffers from some of the allergies, upper respiratory, and she's [accident] prone," said Granger.

Her daughter's health condition means the two spend a lot of time in the doctor's offices.

"And, sometimes it [will] be a month before we can get an appointment. Or it might not cover whatever she needs," she said.

But, that is no longer a worry for any of the families at the Salvation Army.

Baptist Operation Outreach is now making that facility one of its five stops.

"It's a van and mobile service that provides care, primary care, for the homeless," said Zach Chandler with Baptist Memorial Health Care. "And, it's really just like a physician's office, it's like a clinic inside. And they're able to set down and have their health assessments to get access to medications."

Chandler said the organization also works with people with different social needs, such as finding permanent housing.

"Which is incredibly important for the some 110 families who often call this location, on Jackson Avenue, with the Salvation Army, their temporary home," he said.

For Granger, this van is an answer to her prayers.

"Not waiting on no taxi cab, wondering how we gonna get there, who gonna pick us up. No waiting, you know? Just the convenience, it means a lot to us, a whole lot to us. It's awesome. I'm glad it's here," she said.
