MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A local man's stellar performance Monday night on NBC's hit show "The Voice" is now pushing him to his second round before four superstar judges.

Kris Thomas is a graduate of Trezevant High School and got his musical start at Stax Music Academy.

Now, he is heading back to Los Angeles in hopes of becoming the next big voice.

Thomas wow'ed the judges with his rendition of a Whitney Houston favorite, "Saving All My Love For You".

Shakira loved him.

After the performance, she said, "I'm so glad you're on my team because you're a champ.  Your control, falsetto, pitch, I loved it."

Even judge Adam Levine was not able to comprehend what he had just heard.

"I wish I knew you were a guy," Levine added after Thomas' performance.

Now, Kris Thomas is trying to relax for a few days before heading back to Los Angeles for round two.

"I'm so humbled that Memphians and really the entire country has been so supportive, rallying behind me the way they have been," Thomas said.

Thomas says he was more nervous watching his performance that he was giving it last October.

"Take a song and make it my own and try to be true to myself," he said.

Kris Thomas used to sing at his dad's South Memphis church.  His father says he always knew his son was destined for stardom.

"We sent him to MTSU to get an education but we find out he was getting into talent shows and winning," said Thomas' father, Alvin Fleming.

Kris, however, credits his musical ability to his mother, Sandra Fleming.

"Each time I hear him, I'm like, 'Wow.' I'm just blown away each time I hear him," she said.

Thomas hopes to continue blowing away the audience and judges as he gets ready to travel west.

"I'm just thankful to the City of Memphis for rallying behind me. I'm shocked and overwhelmed by the support I've seen. I just hope they keep pushing," Thomas continued.

Kris Thomas flies back to LA Thursday and starts taping the second round of The Voice next week.
