Prosecutors devote more resources to domestic violence cases

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

There are some big changes ahead for how Nashville prosecutors work with some of their most vulnerable crime victims: those who've been subjected to domestic violence.

The district attorney's office has rolled out a restructured Domestic Violence Prosecution Team composed of 11 people - including six assistant district attorneys and five victim witness coordinators - who will work together to better handle the caseload.

The goal is to devote more attention to individual domestic violence cases, which tend to take more time and energy in the courts.

The county had a designated team 10 years ago, but for budget reasons a few years ago the DA's office had to dismantle the team.

So, this change, for the district attorney general, seems long overdue.

"These are cases that are different than probably most cases that we deal with, because there is so much work we have to do with the victim as well as being concerned about the defendant," said District Attorney General Torry Johnson. "And so there's a little bit more of an almost social worker approach, more than just a pure prosecution approach."

The biggest change was that Mayor Karl Dean increased funding for the office in last year's budget for the city, allowing for the addition of two attorneys to prosecute domestic violence cases.
