Board votes to shut down four schools

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Despite pleas from students who begged them not to, the school board voted to close four elementary schools, Tuesday night.

The schools that will close are Coro Lake, Norris, Orleans, and White's Chapel elementary schools.

It's a sensitive subject, but a decision district officials say will save millions of dollars.

The schools are underutilized and serve far fewer students than they were designed to serve.

Several Norris students were among those who signed up to speak tonight.

The Transition Planning Commission actually recommended closing many more schools so it's an issue that will no doubt come up before the board again.

Another hot topic on Tuesday's agenda was a change in the way teachers will be compensated.

A board vote on the proposed changes, which are more performance-based, was tied.

Several board members hinted that the issue would likely come up again later.
