(WMC-TV) – A man stopped for reportedly shoplifting at a Wal-Mart was critically injured when he was shot by a police officer.

According to the Memphis Police Department, an off duty officer saw a man shoplifting at the store on Austin Peay Highway. He followed him and flagged down two on duty officers.

Police say the man was angry and refused to obey their commands. They say he assaulted one police officer and at one point, the suspect reached for his waistband as if he was hiding a weapon.

Officers say the man continued to ignore their commands and made a sudden movement turning toward officers.

One of the officers fired his gun, hitting the suspect.

The accused shoplifter was taken to The MED where he is listed in critical condition.

Two police officers were also injured in the confrontation but were not hospitalized.

The name of the suspect and the officers involved have not yet been released. The policeman who fired the shot has been relieved of duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
