Education bill rises from the dead in MS

SOUTHAVEN, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Mississippi lawmakers are fighting about the possibility of charter schools opening up in the Magnolia State.

Covering everything from charter schools and merit pay to school takeovers and literacy problems, the sweeping education bill died Tuesday but rose from the dead Wednesday.

"You know, we're in the Easter season and we're still in session," said Rep. Steve Holland, Plantersville. "Bills die and are resurrected around here until you hit that gavel, sine die, and it's all over."

Representative Steve Holland says House democrats do not like all the education measures stuffed into one bill. They want to see the components separated for individual votes, especially the measure making it easier for Mississippi to establish charter schools.

Holland does not support charter schools and if that cannot be voted on by itself he says the entire bill stands to die, permanently.

"We invited conference so three members of the house can be appointed, three members of senate can be appointed, they can work, bring us a bill back by the deadline that will be a true compromise of all the educational subjects," said Holland.

A spokesperson for Republican Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeve's office reminds us that House Bill 890 is not the only education reform bill.

There are plenty of bills covering various aspects of education that are also still alive in the legislature.
