Teammates play rugby game in honor of killed student

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South community is in shock of the loss of a teenager. Christion Hess, 16, was killed in a wreck yesterday near Germantown Road and Crestridge Road.

Hess was a rugby player for Germantown High School. His teammates took the field Thursday against their crosstown rival in honor of their fallen teammate.

Hess' rugby Coach Marc Holley is preparing for one of his team's biggest games with a heavy heart.

"At 8 o' clock we're sitting around eating doughnuts talking about the game tonight, and several hours later, he was gone," said Holley.

Memphis Police said Hess veered off the road in his SUV, and crashed into a fence. It is not clear what caused the accident.

Hess was in his junior year of high school. Holley said Hess was also in the band.

Before giving a signed ball and jesey to Hess' family, the team took on Houston High School with something extra to play for.

"We have to do it for him. He was one of our soldiers, one of our warriors, he's a fallen soldier now, and so we have to pick ourselves up and go play this game for him," said Holley.
