Friends and teammates gather to remember Germantown High School Rugby player killed in traffic accident

(WMC-TV) –Roughly 24 hours after their teammate and friend, Christion Hess was killed in a crash, the Germantown High School Rugby team took to the field honoring their teammate.

Friends call him Chris, and Thursday night's rugby game was played in his honor. It was senior night, but fans gathered to remember and honor Chris, admitting the team had an extra player watching over their game.

It began with a moment of silence and prayer.

"We want to thank you Lord. Tonight father we're cheering on his family."

As the Germantown High School Rugby team took to the field for a match against Houston High School, players and fans had heavy hearts.

Friend Riley Pierce had planned to come watch Chris Thursday night.

"It's honestly amazing that you can see so many people that cared," he said. "I wish I could see him out there. It's hard not to see him out there."

Pierce remembered just how much he loved the sport.

"Go hard or go home was his thing, he was really into. He loved rugby," Pierce said.

But Chris also had a love for cars. Early Thursday morning friends and classmates reserved a parking spot for him.

"Being here tonight, being here with the team being all together, that's what matters most," friend Clayton Pace said. "I think isolation is the worst prison to be in and just being around your friends is just the greatest feeling imaginable."

And sometimes being together is the best way to remember a life lost too soon.

"He meant so much to us, and there are so many people he meant so much to and he's gonna be greatly missed," Pace said.

Germantown won the match Thursday night against Houston.

Chris' friends are asking for thoughts and prayers as they prepare to say goodbye to their friend.
