MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - If you are looking to adopt a four-legged friend into your family, the Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County is a good place to look -- especially the first week in April.

The second annual 36-hour Mega Adoptathon begins Friday April 5 at 8 a.m. And though adopting the perfect pet into your family is priceless, you have the opportunity to find a loyal pal for a bargain.

Gizmo is one happy canine now that she has a forever home. Her family found her at last year's adoptathon.

"We came to the adoptathon. We had always wanted a dog. We didn't know that we were gonna bring her home that day, but we saw her in the cage and she had those puppy dog eyes and we just knew that we needed to spend some time with her and we did and we fell in love," explained Gizmo's "mom", Shannon McGreger.

Gizmo was not always so happy.

She came to the humane society's attention after she was rescued January 2012 from a U-Haul on Interstate 40 in Fayette County.

Gizmo was one of 140 dogs crammed in a cage with two or three other animals. They were all packed into the U-Haul and a minivan filled with their own filth. They had no food or water.

The two California women with the animals were headed to Virginia to start up a pet rescue.

"Their motives were...right and nice, but their execution was a little flawed because the animals, it turned out they were in really bad shape, they were malnourished, they had bite marks," said John McGreger. "Gizmo actually had a bite mark on her head that she had to get treated for."

The McGregers say they might never have met Gizmo if not for last year's Mega Adoptathon and numerous radio advertisements.

This year's adoptathon promises deeply reduced adoption fees for humane society animals. Adoptions usually cost around $90 to $96. For humane society pets adopted during the event, they will be reduced to $36 or less.

"There will actually be a time where you can get an animal for zero dollars," added Katie Pemberton, Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County.

The last 12 hours of this year's adoptathon will also include animals from a dozen other rescue groups and shelters.

"So, if you don't see your forever friend here in our facility then you can find one from some of the many others that will be here," said Pemberton.

Who knows? Maybe you, too, will fall in love and make a dog or cat very happy.

The 36-hour Mega Adoptathon will be held April 5 and April 6. It begins at 8 a.m. Friday and will run until 8 p.m. Saturday.
