'Heart of Memphis' to celebrate city

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - With a KKK rally planned for downtown over Easter weekend, the city wanted to showcase the best of Memphis through an event called the Heart of Memphis.

Tiger Lane's atmosphere will brighten the city Saturday. It will be full of food trucks, a farmers market will be present, and there will be a classic car show. It is all an attempt to celebrate Memphis and its diversity.

It did not look like much Friday, but come Saturday it will transform.

"Celebrate each other, we are a city that loves one another. We're a city that gets along, we're a city that's diverse, we're a city that culture and arts are who we are," said the chief of staff for A C Wharton, Bobby White.

The same day as a planned KKK protest downtown, White and several Memphis city leaders are inviting everyone to Heart of Memphis.

Since it falls on Easter weekend, they are also hosting an Easter egg roll with Mayor Wharton. In case of rain, organizers have a plan to take events inside, and don't expect the weather to stop the fun.

"I remember being here a couple of years ago when Memphis is May was flooded out of Tom Lee and it went on. We're just Memphians we know how to monitor and adjust," said White hoping that people chose to come to the event and not the KKK rally. "Come here and celebrate who we are."

The event kicks off tomorrow at 10 a.m. and goes until 5:00 p.m. See the event's schedule here.

This is the first time the city has held the Heart of Memphis celebration. White said with all the support from businesses in the community, this could turn into an annual event.

Bottom line, he doesn't want Memphis to be known for events like Saturday's KKK rally.
