Public forum held to seek input on renaming of city parks

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Parks Renaming Committee held a public forum seeking community input on what to name the three city parks previously known as Nathan Bedford Forrest Park, Jefferson Davis Park, and Confederate Park.

Removing the old names from these parks is the action that sparked the KKK to plan its rally over Easter weekend.

With that over, the committee is setting its sights of new names.

But several speakers at the public forum suggested the new names should be the same as the old, asking the committee to return the original names to the parks.

City councilman Myron Lowery, who was the first to suggest changing the park names, says he has reached his intended goal of creating discussion over the issue.

Reverend Dwight Montgomery says a more important issue than renaming these parks is the poor current conditions at some other city parks.

The renaming committee will make a recommendation to the city council, which will ultimately select names for the parks.
