Senatobia stores ready to serve alcohol

SENATOBIA, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Alcohol is coming to Senatobia, Mississippi. As of Wednesday, many convenience store shelves are empty, but they will be full of beer on Friday once Senatobia starts selling alcohol in city limits.

"We had about 1/3 or 40 percent of our shelves emptied out just for alcohol," said convenience store owner Nimesh Sisodiya.

Senatobia will be the only place in Tate County alcohol can be sold after voters approved the measure earlier this year. It is expected to bring additional tax revenue and jobs to a city trying to recruit new business.

"This town gets dull after nine, and I mean you can go to the store and not worry about, 'Am I going to get hit by a drunk driver on the way to the store?'" said Senatobia resident Robin Shields.

Owners will be watching for loitering and other nuisances that could hurt business or the town's image.

"It's important to get our revenues up, but not at the cost of sacrificing the store turning it into a rundown environment," said Sisodiya.

Those alcohol sales will begin starting at 7 p.m. on Friday.
