Memphis, Shelby County discuss security deal

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis city leaders are talking about a deal with the Shelby County Commission involving the Memphis Animal Shelter and security for the new school district.

"City taxpayers would be considerably ahead, county taxpayers would be ahead too. That's what's kind of nice about it. It's a win-win," said Shelby County Commission Chairman Mike Ritz.

Ritz was talking about a deal for Shelby County to take over the Memphis Animal Shelter and in exchange, Memphis would run school security for the new Unified School District next year.

"This isn't something new for the county. If you'll recall we took over the Rape Crisis Center under very similar circumstances," he said.

That happened almost two years ago and since then, the county took over the Rape Crisis Center.

All of the complaints have stopped and now, Shelby County is ready to step again and take over the Memphis Animal Shelter if Memphis police can run security at the schools.

"They've got more policemen. They got policemen that know the kids, the teachers, the neighbors, they're patrolling the neighborhoods anyways," added Ritz.

Some Memphis City Council members are ready to deal, including Shea Finn.

The idea came up months ago but now with budget season approaching and a new fiscal year beginning July 1, a deal could get done as long as other issues do not get in the way.

"There are big issues out there I would hope that we could just for the good of everybody not worry about that," said Ritz.

Worry or not, both sides hope to hammer out a deal involving the Memphis Animal Shelter and the schools' security before July.
