SOUTHAVEN, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Seniors were promised a center and some believe delaying the vote is a political ploy – with their interests caught in the crossfire.

Sandra Lantrip is not an expert painter, but she is getting pretty good. Art classes are just one option for local seniors.

"We have ballroom dancing classes which I'm trying to talk my husband into," said Lantip.

But even if her husband agreed to dance, she is not sure where they would go. Current programs and rooms are crowded.

On Tuesday, the board of aldermen voted to delay issuing bonds on a new building again.

Many Southaven citizens said space is hard to come by for 1,800 members of the Southaven Senior adult group – growing by the day.

"I feel it's just a political ploy and I don't think its right for the seniors," said Southaven Senior Adult Group member Leslie Davis.

Leslie wonders if the board will ever vote to fund the project as long as Davis is mayor. He is under multiple investigations for city spending, but is running for re-election.

"I don't see why there's a reason we should be waiting, we were promised this last year," said Leslie.

Aldermen said they are not against the center, but some want to wait for other city debts to be paid off and make sure there is enough money in the reserves for future parks projects - including the senior center.

Nancy Rainey with the Southaven Senior Adult Group said it has given her plenty to think about when she heads to the polls.

"It's all political and all those people that voted it out and not to do anything, we got an election coming up, vote them out get some new ones in," she said.

One of the aldermen said Wednesday that it is possible the subject could be brought up again, maybe in a different format.
