Governor pulls school voucher bill

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam pulled a bill that would provide school vouchers to low income families.  The bill has had Republicans split on the issue, which will now have to wait until next year.

State Senator Brian Kelsey is disappointed in the governor's decision.

"I've always been very clear that I want to help as many low income children, especially here in Memphis, as I possibly can with this legislation," said Kelsey.

But the governor and senate majority leader, Mark Norris, says too much was happening too fast.

"Either run your own bill or come back next year, don't hijack our bill. And that's part of the protocol and the reason for that is that these education reform bills are specifically tailored and they're about the kids," said Norris.

"I think these low income children are absolutely a priority and we should focus on passing this bill. And if the leadership and the legislation wants to make this happen we can make this happen," said Kelsey.

And while it appears the Republicans are divided on the issue, both say they expect lawmakers to take a deeper look at it next year.
