Grocery store thieves target unattended purses

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Credit card thieves have been targeting some Mid-South grocery stores. As of Sunday, a couple of suspects are under arrest. There is still a concern that others are still out there.

It is something many women have accidentally done before. They are shopping at the grocery store with their purse in the front of the cart. Then they turn around to grab something off a shelf.

That is when these thieves are taking advantage of getting away with many people's wallets, and sometimes more.

"It's always on the shoulder," said shopper Ashley Buescher. "I'm always looking around, and I always have my purse tight on my shoulder. When I'm getting gas I have it locked in my front seat and the card in my pocket."

Just last week someone was not watch their purse, and thieves took advantage.

It happened inside a Kroger on South Mendenhall.

According to an affidavit, Samuel Jones and Joshua Hughes walked into the store separately.

Hughes wandered around the fruit section staring towards the SunTrust bank. While Jones followed a woman around, and took her wallet from inside her purse.

Surveillance video caught them meeting in the middle of the store and leaving.

They drove to a Mapco Express on Park and Mount Moriah. Inside the store, they were swiping a card when police pulled up.

According to the police report, Hughes handed the driver a stack of credit cards. The drive then handed that stack to another passenger who threw them under the seat.

When Jones was asked to get out of the car police found the cards under the seat, a black wallet, and the woman's checkbook.

But this is not the first time, a similar incident happened at the Wal-Mart on Germantown Parkway. At that location, the two men stole a woman's wallet, threw it in the trash and got away with the money.

As of Sunday Samuel Jones remains in jail, and he appears in court Monday.

He is charged with identity theft, criminal conspiracy and tampering with evidence.

Joshua Jones remains a suspect in this case, but no word on charges against him at this time.
