Memphian introduces 'bluntry' music to 'The Voice' judges

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Another Mid-South native impressed the judges on NBC's "The Voice".

Grace Askew is a 6th generation Memphian and is moving onto the next round of the hit reality TV show.

Her family and friends cheered her on Monday night at a watch party in the Bluff City.

Meanwhile, Grace Askew is in Los Angeles working on her next round performance.

Askew performed her rendition of the Nancy Sinatra song "These Boots are made for Walking".

Now, she hopes her cowboy boots will help her walk out onto center stage as the next "Voice".

Within seconds of starting her song Monday night, Blake Shelton decided she was the one for him.

"I found one I really like and I'm excited about it," Shelton said.

26-year-old Grace Askew calls her music "bluntry" -- a mixture of blues and country.

She says her grassroots efforts have already taken her a long way in her music career, but she is ready to move on to the next level of stardom.

"Booking shows, making tour posters, calling radio stations, waking up on my couch one morning and on the floor another morning," Askew described her career so far.

Askew's family and friends gathered Monday night in Cooper-Young to watch her performance.

Her dad, Mark Askew, says this nationwide exposure is a dream come true.

"I'd say at age 13, she started playing upstairs in her room...she'd get her recorder out and start recording songs," said Mark.

Askew says she has already toured in 40 states and is excited to discover a bigger musical horizon.

Her mom was delighted to see country star Blake Shelton choose Grace as a part of his team.

"She really loves Blake's music. She's very eclectic in her music appreciation. She really loved all the Memphis artists. It's a combination of a lot of different artists," added her mom, Rebecca.

Blake Shelton went on to tell Grace Askew that she could end up making history on the show.

You can continue to follow Grace Askew's performances by watching "The Voice".  The next episode airs Tuesday at 7 p.m.
