MY TURN: Memphis music takes national stage

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - As Mid-South residents, we were beaming with pride this week as Memphis music received the recognition it deserves.

First Lady Michelle Obama greeted our music legends, past, present and future, with the words, "Memphis is in the house!" And of course, she meant the White House where students attended a workshop with instructors like Sam Moore, Justin Timberlake, and Charlie Musslewhite.

That evening, they were joined by some of our other musical all-stars for a magnificent night of Memphis soul music that will be shown on the PBS television network next week. Memphis can rightly claim a legacy of leadership in many musical genres, but it's always great to see the Stax group receive the recognition they are due.

Closer to our own TV family, this week, we're celebrating as four Memphians made the cut on NBC's singing competition, The Voice. We'll be cheering for all of them as that competition plays out here on WMC-TV 5 over the next two months.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
