MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – The job posting for Shelby County Schools superintendent far exceeds 1000 words.  It showed up on websites like Career Builder first thing Thursday morning and is extremely lengthy.

"I think it covered everything that the board wanted," said school board member Reginald Porter, who co-chairs the superintendent search committee.

Porter defended the more than two dozen requirements and criteria.

"Well, you shoot for the moon and hope you get somebody that can meet as many as possible," said Porter.

Among the district's desires is finding someone with a great understanding of the history and legacy of Memphis and Shelby County and an ability to succeed despite issues like a state legislative agenda proposing creation of "municipal districts."  The posting also requires a humble leader who inspires trust and treats others with respect.

A search firm formulated the posting based, in part, on input from board members and community meetings.  Porter said it is purposely pointed.

"We want to get the best qualified individual for our search," said Porter.

But at least one fellow board member believes the posting may intimidate potential candidates.

"I don't know why anyone would want it based upon the description," said David Reaves.  "It looks like an impossible job, and in many aspects, it is."

The application deadline for the superintendent's job is May 3rd.  The board wants to hire someone well before the two districts officially merge in August.
