MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Longtime Memphian Violet Castle recalls speaking to a neighbor last Sunday after a frightening encounter in a driveway off Summer Avenue.

"Well, I'm a little bit shocked," said Castle.  "Stephanie was all upset."

Memphis Police say a man forcibly pulled the woman out of her car when she refused to get out.  Fortunately, someone else was nearby.

"My neighbor came into the street yelling hysterically, telling me that somebody tried to carjack her," said neighbor Michael Perry.  "That she'd been snatched out of her car."

Perry spooked the suspect by calling police, and that's not all.

"I chased after him, like literally," said Perry.

Police released surveillance photos of the suspect Friday that were taken at a convenience store where they believe he bought a beer.  The beer can was later found on the attempted robbery scene.

"It was so cold it hadn't had a chance to condensate yet in the bag," said Perry.

Perry and other neighbors hope fingerprints from the beer can help bust the suspect once someone identifies him.

"We got a pretty good police department, regardless of what some people think," said Castle.

Meanwhile, Perry likes to think others would intervene like he did.

"We're not very known for looking out for one another and that's a shame," said Perry.
