Dunn Hall evacuated due to suspicious package

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Everything is back to normal on the University of Memphis campus after some scary moments Monday morning.

Students taking class inside Dunn Hall were allowed inside back in the building around 11:30 a.m. after being evacuated because of a suspicious package found in the stairwell.

As students filled the sidewalk outside, the MPD Bomb Squad and campus police scoured Dunn Hall.

"It was kind of surprising like nothing ever happened like this on campus before," explained student Jennifer Joyner.

The MPD Bomb Squad and campus police scoured Dunn Hall.

Campus police say a custodian found that package in the northeast stairwell of the building early Monday morning.

A Tiger Text went out to students around 9:30 a.m. warning them of what was going on.

Students were immediately evacuated from the building.

Lorrie Hayes first noticed the package last Thursday.

"I remember thinking it was strange. It was wrapped up neatly like a Christmas present," said Hayes. "I walked past a package, a rectangular cardboard package that was neatly wrapped up with blue painters tape."

When the bomb squad opened the package, the found a laptop and some newspapers inside.

They are not sure who left the package in the stairwell.

"I think things like this happen all the time because people want attention," Joyner continued.

School security advises any student who sees a suspicious package, a suspicious person, or car to call campus police immediately.

They credit the Tiger Text system for the quick evacuation of the students Monday.
