3 people escape house fire

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Three people feel lucky to be alive after fire raced through their home Monday morning.

Investigators are releasing new details into what started the fire.

The blaze broke out around 3 a.m. at a home on Southwall Street in South Memphis.

Firefighters say when they arrived on the scene they could see thick smoke and fire.

Three people were inside when the fire started.  They ran to safety and were not hurt.

The house, however, suffered major smoke, fire, and water damage.

A vehicle was also destroyed.

Investigators say the blaze was caused by a faulty wall receptacle in the laundry room.

According to investigators, a working smoke detector was in place in the home.

It is not clear yet whether the people who were in the home are related.

The damage is estimated to be around $60,000.
