(WMC-TV) - In the midst of the unified schools merger, a Southeast Memphis businessman hopes to bring students together with two new schools he plans to open this August.

The upcoming charter schools will take in only 350 students in August, so administrators are anticipating a waiting list.

Financial Planner and pastor Laurence Plummer knows a lot about dreams.

"It's really a dream come true," he said.

His clients are A-list sports figures, gospel singers, doctors, and lawyers around the world.

His latest venture: Two new charter schools in unincorporated Shelby County.

"A lot of our children are lost and this is going to be a tremendous way of impacting their lives," Plummer said.

His latest dream set its seed when the preacher's son was an all-state basketball player.

"I saw other children that didn't have the privilege of living like I was living. We weren't rich, but we were very comfortable," he explained. "I'm 54 now. I'm at an age I can look back and help children. My heart says, 'Reach back.'"

Former mayor and Superintendent Willie Herenton will run the W.E.B. DuBois School of Entrepreneurship, which will be a kindergarten through fifth grade elementary school, as well as the Companion Middle School of Leadership and Public Policy.

Plummer will break ground on the schools' 14-acres Wednesday, just yards from his Love Fellowship Ministries Church.

"I want these children we come in contact with to always shoot for success and understand what success is," he said. "Success is not how much money you have or what kind of car you drive or how you live. Success is when you have a balanced life and you're doing things the right way."

Plummers' investors, board and Dr. Herenton will attend Wednesday's ceremony on South Germantown Road.

That is when Plummer will unveil a rendering of the school and talk jobs.
