Differences in teacher, administrator pay next hurdle for unified school board

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) -- The Memphis City and Shelby County schools merger is full steam ahead, but school leaders still have many issues to work through before the next school year begins August 5.

Before students begin the 2013-14 school year, the issue of paying teachers and administrators the same salary needs to be resolved -- and it's expected to be a heated discussion.

The pay disparity will be "one of the most critical issues that the board will have to address," says Shelby County unified school board member David Pickler.

Memphis city school teachers make more than Shelby County school teachers.

But Shelby County school administrators make more than Memphis City School administrators -- and the disparity is fairly large.

"In some cases, you could be talking in tens of thousands of dollars," Pickler said.

It's a concern that goes beyond both Memphis City and Shelby County schools.

"My interest in this is a taxpayer -- where our tax dollars go our property tax dollars go," taxpayer Joseph Kyles said. "We want them evenly distributed."

Shelby County unified school leaders are expected to discuss this issue as early as Tuesday.
