Family of man killed by officer demands answers

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South family is mourning their loved one, who was shot by a Memphis police officer in the Wal-Mart parking lot. He died 10 days later.

The family of George Golden is now demanding answers.

Graphic images show George Golden lying in his hospital bed at The MED after he was shot by Memphis police officer Leon Dickson.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the Raleigh Wal-Mart on March 27.

"It's our belief that this was not just a death from a gunshot," said the family's attorney, Jeff Rosenblum. "It was a death from a gunshot and beating after that gunshot and lack of oxygen to the brain from what we believe was excessive force after the shooting."

According to the Memphis Police Department, the incident with Golden began when off duty officer Kimberly Houston saw Golden shoplifting at the Wal-Mart.

Houston followed him out to the parking lot.

That is when police say he became irate with on duty officers Erica Washington and Leon Dickson.

Police say Golden then reached inside his waistband as if he was concealing a weapon.

That is when officer Dickson fired his gun, hitting Golden.

Attorneys are now trying to figure out if this is a simple mistake or a case of police brutality.

"It certainly looks like it when you have a man shot for stealing DVDs and then beaten and there's about an hour and a half delay before he gets any medical case," said Rosenblum.

Police later determined Golden did not have a weapon.

The affidavit of complaint mentions nothing about Golden being shot by Officer Dickson.

Now, his family is hoping someone will help them figure out exactly what happened as they continue to mourn the loss of their family member.

Attorney Jeff Rosenblum says he now wants to hear from witnesses to the shooting that night.

Meanwhile, Officer Leon Dickson is still off duty with pay as the investigation continues.
