Mitsubishi to bring 275 jobs to Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Mitsubishi is now in the Mid-South and with it comes 275 full time jobs.

Sixty people are already on the job and more are on the way after the grand opening of the much anticipated manufacturing plant.

Production is expected to begin June 1.

The Mitsubishi plant is a $200 million investment.

"Primarily it's going to mean several hundred high-quality jobs. This plant has been built for a 50-100 year lifespan. So people will be employed here long after I'm gone," said Mark Herbison, Memphis Chamber of Commerce.

"To the local economy, it's a big, big boost. There will be so many other vendors. It's not merely the employees, but the other suppliers who have to come in to support this operation," said Memphis Mayor A C Wharton.

Mitsubishi plans to manufacture extra-high voltage power transformers that are the size of train locomotives and they will ship around the world.

"And I think it just goes to show you that Memphis is one of the great places in this country not just for distribution anymore but for manufacturing also," added Herbison.

"Some say things like this will never happen. But it's here. It's real," said Wharton.

Mitsubishi also bought a huge piece of property across the street on Riverport Road.

The chamber expects the company to expand there to perhaps triple its local operation.
