Police: Woman threatens to kill mayor over phone

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis woman threatened to kill the City of Memphis mayor while on the phone with a legal advisor. She is now behind bars, as police have to take every threat seriously.

Based on Hattie King's mug shot where she is smiling, you would not know she was arrested for threatening to kill the mayor.

According the affidavit, King called a City of Memphis legal advisor on Monday. In that call, the 49-year-old told the advisor if she had to kill the mayor to get her money she would.

No one was home at the address listed for King, but neighbors recall seeing police at the house Tuesday.

"They were just looking around. They went in the backyard but I don't know why," said neighbor Jane Fisher Mills.

According to the report, King had called City Hall several times to complain about an ongoing dispute with the city.

King allegedly became irate and unreasonable every time she called the city, leading them to believe that her threat was credible.

Mayor A C Wharton could not comment specifically on the threat, but said he trusts investigators.

King remains in jail as of Friday. She is charged with aggravated assault and aggravated stalking.

It is still not clear what she was disputing with the city, but it involves money.
