Mid-South participant calls Boston Marathon explosions 'surreal'

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - In the days that followed the Boston Marathon Bombing people around the country would watch and wait during the intense manhunt for the suspects.

Many are at ease after the second suspect, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, was captured Friday. The sigh of relief extended far beyond the boundaries of Boston, hitting close to home for several runners in the Mid-South.

When the bombs went off on Boylston Street Monday, marathon runner Angie Zinkus of Eads, TN had already finished the race.

About a block away, Zinkus heard the Boston Marathon blasts from a taxi on the way to the airport. In her mind, if her running time was different she would have been there for the explosions.

"I have flashbacks, so to speak. I keep on wondering, 'What if, what if I was here?' There's places where they are mentioning, like the Lord and Taylor, and I was right across the street from there."

Zinkus said she was at a local fundraising event in Memphis for Boston Marathon victims when she heard of Tsarnaev's arrest. She feels that justice is served, but that the bad memories will never be erased.

"It's surreal, is what it is," she said.

Zinkus has already booked her hotel rooms for next year's marathon as she will be going back to Boston.
