MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A teenage girl is in critical condition at The MED after a shooting moved from a church to a street corner where she was walking home from school with some friends.

Now police are looking for the shooter.

AJ Johnson said the shots that hit the girl as she walked home scared everyone in the neighborhood.

"It sounded like pow pow pow pow, so loud," said Johnson. "All the kids went inside the house. Old people were looking out the window. Everybody was scared they were shaking."

Police said the teenager was with a group of girls at Chuck and Wingate Cove near Sheffield High when someone in a PT Cruiser that was possibly black, started shooting.

Police checked out a PT cruiser at the end of Wingate Cove.

"This is my cousin's car so they couldn't be looking for her car cause she is at work," Lisa Howard said.

The shooting apparently started near Olivet Baptist Church then spilled onto the church campus.

"One of the young people ran into the church and someone fired some shots at them," said Olivet Baptist Church Pastor, Dr. Eugene Gibson.

Dr. Gibson said it was two shots and that dozens of young men were in the gym when it all happened.

"We're just grateful no one was hurt here and these young men can continue to come to the gym and make a difference in their lives," Gibson said.

Neighbors who live near the shooting aren't sure what to think.

"It's really awful," Johnson said. "I have a 5-year-old grandson here. I am afraid to let him come out here in the yard and play."

The girl who was shot was moved from Le Bonheur Children's Hospital to The MED after her condition worsened. Police said at this point they have no suspects.
