Memphis teacher honored at The White House

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Allyson Chick was honored as Tennessee's Teacher of the Year. She is a hero to her principal, students, and staff at Richland Elementary School.

The day after receiving the award, Chick was surprised with a pep rally that brought tears of joy, but then she was summoned to The White House to be a special guest of the president.

"They are role models, who show our kids how to work hard to reach their potential," said President Barack Obama about the top teachers from across our nation.

"People ask me how this experience has been so far and its nothing short of overwhelming," said Chick, who joined other teachers at The White House.

Tennessee education officials say Chick is the first Memphis teacher to earn Teacher of the Year honors in 30 years.

Her co-workers, students, and their parents are very proud.

"Ms. Chick is awesome, she is constantly pulling the best of them, I just couldn't ask for a better teacher," said parent Emily Squires.

"She makes learning fun, when we like, do math she makes up stuff like poems and stuff," said student Camille Clippinger.

Chick's parents say they are proud, too.

"She not only exemplifies what a teacher should be but what a daughter is," they said.

Tennessee's Teacher of the Year award honors teachers for their devotion to students and classroom.

Clearly it is an award that Allyson Chick truly deserves.
