Memphis police kill man after being struck by his car

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – Memphis Police say officers shot and killed a man Tuesday night after he struck them with his car. It's the second deadly officer-involved shooting in as many weeks.

Blue lights and yellow tape blocked Jackson Avenue just east of Watkins in both directions, where Memphis Police shot and killed the man behind the wheel of a pink sedan.

"That driver accelerated in an aggressive manner, striking both officers," Col. Mike Ryall said.

Witness Lena O'Kain said she heard the gunshots.

"As we were coming up the street and that's when I saw the car roll to where it stopped," she said.

One of many witnesses got cell phone video moments after the deadly confrontation, showing officers looking into the car.

Family members on the scene identified the suspect by his nick-name, "Tom-Tom."

Police would only say he was initially pulled over because his vehicle was considered to be "suspicious."

"I'm all for law enforcement, but it's got to be done right," one witness said.

Many here hoped this latest officer-involved killing was indeed justified.

The officers who were struck by the suspect's car received only minor injuries. They will likely be relieved of duty pending an investigation.
