Teen found safe after checked out from school by imposter

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A Nashville teen who has been missing for weeks after someone pretending to be a parent checked her out of school has been found unharmed in west Tennessee.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office said 16-year-old Katy Mason was located safe and returned to her mother in Nashville on Wednesday.

No other details have been released on with whom she was staying or why she left Nashville, but the sheriff's office said the investigation is now under the jurisdiction of Metro police.

The teen's mother, Betty Mason, told Channel 4 News earlier this month said someone had called and checked out Katy from her class at Hillsboro High.

"I asked, 'which one of her parents signed her out?'" said Mason. "They told me it was a phone call from her mother. I said, 'no, I am her mother. Someone has impersonated me.'"

Mason said because Katy had problems skipping class, she had already conducted meetings with the school to explain her daughter could not leave without a parent signature.

"What was the security question?'" asked Mason, referring to her conversation with the school. "What made you feel safe from a phone call to let this child leave your school? They said, 'we asked what Katy's birthday was.' You can go on Facebook and find out anybody's birthday."

Metro school representatives said they legally can't discuss student cases but an investigation has started to see if any wrong steps were taken.

Mason said at the time she thought her daughter was likely with her 22-year-old boyfriend, who had recently breached an order of protection the parents filed against him.
