Severe storm leaves damage in its wake

FAYETTE COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A severe storm tore through Fayette County late Saturday night, leaving destruction in its wake.

"My husband and I and my daughter were out on the porch video taping all the lights and stuff and we went back in," said Tatiana Childress, whose family ended up taking cover just before 10 p.m. "I said, 'Babe I don't like this. I don't like this.' Then the wind picked up and yelled, 'Go to the bathroom.' So we all ran to the bathroom and after that it was gone."

The storm hit parts of Belmont Road and Old Highway 59, knocking down trees, power lines, barns, and even lifting a church off of its foundation.

The storm was so powerful it took a 2x4 board more than 400 yards and pushed it right through a front door.

"At first we thought those houses were gone. Because it was black and everything was in our front yard," said Childress.

The Fayette County Sheriff Office says one person was injured but not severely and nobody lost their homes.

"It looks like most of the damage path followed the Old 59 Highway behind us," explained Childress.

There is a lot of cleanup ahead for the Fayette County community that is grateful the damage was not worse.
