YOUR TURN: Remembering Maxine Smith

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Accolades are pouring into the Action News 5 Facebook page for civil rights pioneer Maxine Smith. For this week's "Your Turn" segment, we're choosing one of those posts.

This one's from Rosalind McLendon. In her words:

It was the Maxines of this world who not only ensured integration in Memphis, but in towns like mine. As I reflect on the life of Maxine Smith, I look at what it was that made her special. She was a woman who just wanted things to be equal, and would have died trying.

She was vocal. She was determined. She was headstrong. She was also highly educated and she wanted that for others.

She found her purpose in life and pursued it. Pursued it so that thousands upon thousands have reaped the benefits. It is now up to us to take her example and make our mark on our communities. My prayers to her family and friends.

That's Rosalind McClendon's turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
