Garbage strike ends

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Republic Services announced striking employees are expected to return to work Monday morning.

Employees and members of Teamsters Local 984 "overwhelmingly ratified" a new collective bargaining agreement. The five-year contract that provides pay raises for employees.

The agreement also allows employees to exit the Central States pension fund in favor of the 401(k) plan that is available to Republic management. Republic will contribute immediately vested lump sums into the 401(k) on behalf of Memphis employees.

"This is a great outcome for Republic, our customers and most importantly, our employees because it honors their work and years of service," Republic's Memphis general manager, Roger Lawrence, said in a release.

Not all members agree with the new deal.

"I don't agree with the pension plan which is a 401k, knowing that the stock market the way it is," Teamster Robert Walker said.  "They take money from you without you having any say so in what they do."
