MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Plans are revealed for civil rights icon Maxine Smith a few days following her death Friday. It includes a memorial along with a visitation and funeral.

The memorial will be held Saturday, May 4 at 767 Walker Avenue which is Metropolitan Baptist Church.

The public memorial is at 11 a.m., and the public viewing starts at 1 p.m. It ends at 9 p.m. The burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery.

Smith was executive secretary for the NAACP for more than 40 years. She along with her husband Dr. Vasco Smith coordinated sit-ins, protests, and voter registration drives.

Her fight for equality thrust her into the spotlight. In 1957, Smith was rejected by what was then Memphis State University, because of her race.

Now many will honor her in a public memorial this Saturday afternoon.
