MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis City councilwoman Janis Fullilove has been found not guilty in the domestic assault case against her husband, Vernon Chalmers.

Fullilove previously hoped to get this case dismissed, but as a condition for dismissal, the district attorney's office asked that the two go to drug and alcohol treatment.

The councilwoman and her attorneys did not feel that was necessary, so the case went to trial.

Fullilove was found not guilty on Tuesday of domestic assault and bodily harm.

The couple was arrested in August after police responded to an alleged physical fight at their home.

According to the original police affidavit, Fullilove's husband accused her of getting drunk and throwing a dish. The dish then ricocheted and cut him.

Charges against Chalmers were dismissed before the trial.
