Plans to change DeSoto County school zones canceled

DESOTO COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - DeSoto County Schools canceled plans to change attendance zones next year.

The decision was made as a result of feedback from parents in the county.

The change was originally proposed due to overcrowding in DeSoto Central and Southaven. Students at some schools were at risk of being forced to switch schools.

"We have decided not to move forward with redistricting or rezoning," said Superintendent Milton Kuykendall in a written statement. "We have worked out a solution to creatively use existing buildings and accommodate our enrollment."

He added, "One of the strengths of our school system is the dedication and involvement of our parents. When they talk, we listen."

Parents like Beth Eder are relieved to learn about the latest decision.

"You send out a letter initially with concise plans and then you send out a letter afterward that is very vague, not giving the parents or the students a lot of confidence," said Eder.

The proposal was to be voted on during the May 6 school board meeting. It will no longer be discussed.

School officials say they will still have to handle the overcrowding situation in "creative ways" but they did not say whether they have any specific plans yet.

"They're still crowded and they're going to deal with those in more creative ways that we were able to come up with without public input," said John Caldwell, DeSoto County Schools.

Parents can expect letters about the most recent decision to be mailed to their homes.
