MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A White Station High School football coach is suspended pending an investigation into allegations that he physically disciplined a player. Memphis City Schools is investigating the abuse reports.

Head football coach Devin Rutherford has led the Spartans for five seasons.

At White Station High School, students revere Spartans head football coach Rutherford.

"I think he's like a good figure for the football players," said student Jasmine Jefferson.

They even have a nickname for him.

"Big, big man on campus," said student Brianna Harris.

But, for the second time this year, the B.M.O.C. is off the job.

In a statement issued Thursday, the district said Rutherford was accused of physically disciplining a player or players. All appropriate authorities have been notified. He has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

"He's been an excellent example of a coach though, so I'm hoping nothing happens with that," said parent Wiley Jefferson.

The school invited football parents to a meeting Wednesday night to discuss the issue.

It is not the first time Rutherford has been disciplined. Last August he and five of his players were suspended after an alleged hazing incident that led the district to forfeit the Spartans season opener.

The district hasn't said whether the two incidents are related. Despite the continuing controversy, most students and parents hope Rutherford will be back on the playing field soon.

"I hope it works out because you know we lost a coach due to cancer, and I really don't think the school deserves to lose another coach," said Jefferson.
