Stax Museum celebrates 10 years

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Stax Museum of American Soul Music is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

The museum is a tribute to Rufus Thomas and the stable of stars that made Stax Records famous.

At an anniversary ribbon cutting, Stax Founder Jim Stewart was honored for courage he and his sister, Estell Axton, showed when they started the label and broke the color barrier.

"It was such a chance that she took to mortgage everything that we had, which was just a tiny little house, to buy that first musical machine that recording machine," said Estell Axton's daughter, Doris Fredrick.

And now the museum is building for the future.

Since the doors opened, the area has been the catalyst for massive renovations and academic programs.

"We have accomplished so much and this neighborhood is starting to come back. We not only have the museum, but we now have the Stax Music Academy, the Soulsville Charter School," said Stax Museum Communications Director Tim Sampson.

And in true Stax form, music students serenaded Stewart, Fredrick, former employee Deanie Parker, and many others right in the place where it all started.
