MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - TSA agents have a warning for passengers traveling through Memphis International Airport.

Early Thursday morning, airport police arrested someone for trying to get through the security checkpoint with a gun.

"Passengers have to take responsibility. They have to be held responsible for what's in their bag," said TSA Memphis Federal Security Director Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy says nine guns have been found at the airport so far this year.

Eight were loaded, some with a full round of ammo.

"I trust the TSA is going to do their job and other passengers are going to be alert," said Rhonda Wiggins of Sarasota, Florida.

Wiggins and her husband are in Memphis for a few days.  She does not own a gun and does not like the idea of people trying to bring them onto planes.

"Scary thing is, you never know. Is it a test case to see if you can get away with it and then something bigger is going to come along," Wiggins added.

If a gun is found, airport police are notified immediately.

The person carrying the gun will be arrested and will face a $7,500 fine.

TSA agents advise passengers traveling through Memphis International Airport and others across the country to know state laws regarding bringing guns into airports.

They also advise passengers to frequently visit their local airport's website in addition to the one operated by the TSA.
