Memorial held for civil rights activist Maxine Smith

(WMC-TV) - The Mid-South is saying good-bye to a champion for civil rights and education: the late Maxine Smith.

Smith died last week at the age of 83.

She fought on the front lines of the fight for equal rights for minorities and women and played an integral part of the civil rights movement in its connection to the Mid-south.

Friends say her everlasting legacy makes this a time of sadness and celebration.

"She was the glue. When many others started and stopped along the way because of obstacles, you can't imagine the hatred that took place, physical and verbal. She didn't quit," said Former NAACP President Warner Dickerson.

"I think her impact is a great legend that she is leaving behind that people are treated decently and with respect and with honor," added Debra Brown, NAACP.

"She was a teacher, a friend, a mother, a leader, and, all that in one," said Coleman Thompson, NAACP.

The burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
