Mapco's credit/debit card systems hacked

Posted: Updated:

(WMC TV) - If you used a credit or debit card at any MAPCO store in the last two months, you better check your bank statements and pull your credit reports.

MAPCO Express, Inc.'s corporate office in Brentwood, TN, revealed on its web site that third-party hackers used malware to compromise the chain's payment card processing systems.

According to the site, separate breaches occurred between March 19 and March 25; between April 14 and 15; and between April 20 and 21. They include an uncertain number of customer debit and credit card numbers at MAPCO Express, MAPCO Mart, East Coast, Discount Food Mart, Fast Food and Fuel, Delta Express and Favorite Markets in seven states, including Tennessee, North Mississippi and Arkansas.

"The hackers may have stolen information that could potentially be used to initiate fraudulent credit and debit card transactions," said MAPCO's web statement.

The Action News 5 Investigators learned of the breach after the end of business hours Monday, so we could not reach anyone at the Brentwood corporate office. Its web statement goes on to say that the company's working with the FBI's National Cyber Investigative Joint Task Force to hunt down the hackers.

"We also began working with a nationally-recognized computer forensics investigation firm and the payment card associations to determine exactly what happened and what information may have been compromised," the statement reads. "We took steps to disable the malware and further strengthen the security of our payment card processing systems."

MAPCO Express, Inc. has been out in front of the breaches, including an in-depth page that links directly to the three credit bureaus.  If that link does not take you to the security alert page, please click on "Security Alert" on MapcoExpress.com.

If you have used your credit or debit card at any of these MAPCO holdings in the last two months, please pull your credit report from each of the three bureaus either from the direct links on MAPCO's alert page or from AnnualCreditReport.com. Closely monitor your checking and credit card account statements for any unusual activity.
