Video of '10 second fights' unveil disturbing trend among students

FAYETTE COUNTY, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Shocking video is exposing a troubling trend at Mid-South schools. A fight was filmed at West Junior High School in Oakland. The teens involved are now facing suspension.

Videos sent to the Action News 5 newsroom show two young men doing what teens call "windmilling". They are hitting each other with their arms and hands. But parents say they were not really fighting.

"It's staged, but it's a trend and that's what teens do," said Tamela Thompson, who is a parent.

The trend is called "10 second fights" and it is not something parents at West Junior High are proud of.

"The video thing has upset parents not knowing it's staged," said parent Kristy Rector.

Fayette County Schools says these videos were filmed on cell phones at the school.

Superintendent James Teague says the five teens involved are now serving in-school suspensions.

While parents say school administration handled the situation properly, they say cell phones should not haven even been allowed inside.

"Parents need to take initiative and step up and do what they're supposed to be doing," added Thompson.

Superintendent Teague said that a phone message will be going out to Fayette county parents later Wednesday afternoon to let them know that this situation has been handled.
