Memphis contestants make final 12 in 'The Voice'

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Memphis' own Kris Thomas and Sarah Simmons advance to the next round of NBC's "The Voice" after results were revealed Wednesday.

Voting for the national competition took place Monday and Tuesday after a live broadcast. Viewers voted to keep Kris Thomas in the competition on Team Shakira.

"It's really humbling but, even more so, it just makes me trust Shakira that much more because she hand-picked each of our songs for us. We didn't really have any input, they just told us what we were singing. I took it, I took her advice, and it worked. It just makes me trust her as a coach, that she really knows what she's doing," said Thomas.

There's no shortage of Thomas fans at Stax Music Academy in Memphis, the former birthplace of Memphis soul turned musical training ground.

Many of the students met Thomas when he shot a music video there.

"You know, they're really proud of him, and I think, he's a great example of what can happen, you know, if you stick to it and focus and hone your talent, your craft and I think he's an inspiration to them. I know he is to all of us because he's, you know, not only so talented also just such a good guy. Such a nice, nice guy," said Tim Sampson of Stax.

In what many saw as a surprise "The Voice" outcome Wednesday night – Memphis Visible College student, and show favorite, Sarah Simmons was in the hot seat.

The decision about whether or not she would move on to the top 12 was in the hands of Coach Adam Levine – who decided to keep her on his team.

"It was nerve-racking. But, again, I'm just grateful to be here. And I know I want to work my butt off even harder, you know. I just want to work my butt off to make sure I keep going through," said Simmons.
